Sylvia Stevens's interest in birds grew from a holiday in Southern Africa where she became as equally fascinated by the variety of bird life as the wild animals roaming the Safari parks. On her return to the UK she began making bird sculptures.

Her sculptures are each uniquely hand-crafted using a variety of stoneware clay including porcelain. They are painted with coloured slips and engobes (occasionally glazed) and fired to a temperature of 1240 degrees centigrade. The large pieces can be displayed indoors or out in the garden and are completely frost-proof. Her tiles are hand painted porcelain.

Sylvia has a studio and kiln in South East London.
